In June of 2011, Alabama Power marked the culmination of four years of extensive collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders by filing a license application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for Lake Martin.

The effort to restore the historic Smith Mountain fire tower and turn one of the most beautiful landscapes on Lake Martin into a one-of-a-kind public hiking park took a big step forward in late July when Alabama Power Co. agreed to deed the fire tower and 10 acres of mountaintop land to the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association (CRATA).
