Allison Wetherbee works as the Community Relations Director for Camp ASCCA Easter Seals. Originally from Camden, Ala., Allison graduated from Auburn University in Montgomery with a master’s degree in counseling. She became a mental health therapist in 1996 and worked in that profession for 11 years in Russellville, Ala.

As soon as Mercy Wilborn skidded to a stop at the bottom of the steep waterslide at Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults, she began begging for another turn.

“You saw me going down?” she asked on a sweltering hot day in July. “Ahhh, I was screaming really loud. I want to go again.”

On a small point on the main run of the Tallapoosa River, about halfway between Camp ASCCA and Martin Dam, sits a tiny, two-room cabin. The Hut is only about 20 by 24 feet.
