The beautiful sunrises, gorgeous sunsets and deep clear water – oh how the days on beautiful Lake Martin seem to never end. On one particular summer afternoon in 2002, David and Vera Ellen Scott and Robby and Denise Segars had an invitation to have dinner with Curt and Pepe Cope at their lake house.

The crisp smell of pine needles and fallen leaves sweep over me as I step out of the car; I have just arrived at lake Martin. The chill of autumn weather falls over me, so I hurry inside with the bags. I receive a warm welcome as I walk in. Around me, place cards and expensive china are set up for tomorrow’s feast.

We learned five years ago about Goat Island on Lake Martin. “Yes, there are real goats on the island,” we were told by several of our new neighbors. This large island is located close to the Lake Martin Dam and is frequented by many boaters on the lake.

Many years ago a boy and a girl, Rich and Jeanne Lubben met in their hometown, went to school and church together and enjoyed many of the same things. During the school breaks in the summer they traveled between cottages that their parents owned on lakes in New England. Rich’s folks had a small one room cabin near Otis Reservoir in Otis, Mass. Enjoying the lake life they both knew that someday they wanted to live by a lake.

“I never want to do this ever again!” I screamed, tears rolling down my cheeks. Much of my time at the lake that summer was spent doing faceplants on the water, resulting in a flood of tears.
